Reception History and Research History

In recent years a research cluster focusing on the reception history of antiquity and the research history of antiquity studies has formed at the Department. At the center stands, first of all, the history of disciplines devoted to antiquity at the University of Vienna and their institutionalization in the course of the 19th century; second, Latin epigraphy and antiquity studies during Humanism and the Early Modern period based on handwritten transmissions; and third, antiquity studies and the reception of archaeological finds from the territory of the Habsburg monarchy with a special focus on the area of Transylvania. Additionally, the Collection of the Department has been systematically catalogued and prepared.
